How to fix a recliner that won t close

Having a recliner that won’t close is one of the most frustrating things to deal with. You keep pushing it back and pushing it back but it just won’t stay closed. Your manual (non electric) recliner mechanism is jamme and the bottom extension leg rest part is stuck in the open position.


All I did to fix this problem was spray the metal mechanism with WD40. This short video shows how I was able to fix the stuck leg rest on my lazy boy, Lay Z Boy, reclining chair. For me it was safe,fast and easy.

Many people have issues of recliner sofa not opening like they want to. At times it opens properly but at times it stays close. You must be wondering about the problem. It lies with the springs, joints and hinges which make up the system of the couch.


No matter how hard you try to open it, the recliner gets fixed in the closed or semi-closed position. I found a small piece of wire that had snapped off from somewhere underneath. Tip: Always make sure the electrical cords are routed so they cannot get caught in the reclining mechanism or base unit, or underneath the floor base. Look for bolts or screws under the recliner.


If you find any of these, locate where the bolt or nut belongs and replace it. When a recliner sticks, its mechanism fails to have a full range of movement. Some chairs stick in the down, or close position, making it impossible to angle the chair back or raise the footrest.


Recliners with independently adjustable settings might stick in one place but not. I turned the chair over and removed the motor. Once the motor was unhooked I removed the housing around the gear box of the motor. I was then able to manually reset the motor to the upright position and then put the motor back together. I then manually placed the chair in the upright.

I now have the chair upside down so I can examine the mechanism. My father-in-law just died and we inherited the chair,AND as I expected AFTER reviews it does not work. The poor lady that got stuck in it and it caught on fire. I would SUE the hell out of them. Our second fix for this was not to cram the tape up in the handle itself but rather wrap it around the plastic piece on the long tube located within the support bar.


One possible fix for this is to file away the metal some where the wear in the lock notch has produced an undercut. You would have to be really careful to not file away too much or create a condition where the pin would not stay in the notch as intended.
